Terms & Conditions
Effective Date: August 2026
1. Definitions
- App: The HomeRoom web application, including widgets, Planner, and Tasks.
- HomeRoom: The service owned and operated by Hennigar Software Studio, a company incorporated in Canada and based in Nova Scotia.
- User: Any individual who accesses the App.
- Free Trial: A 60-day period beginning at account registration during which new accounts automatically receive the same access as a Pro Subscription, at no cost and with no payment method required.
- Free Tier: A registered account with data stored locally in your browser, plus an automatic cloud backup. Subject to usage caps (5 classes, 1 unit plan, 3 active tasks). New accounts enter the Free Tier automatically once their Free Trial ends.
- Pro Subscription: An annual subscription granting access to live multi-device Cloud Sync, Remote Control, Guest/Substitute mode, and removal of the Free tier's usage caps (5 classes, 1 unit plan, 3 active tasks).
- District License: A bulk purchase of Pro seats for multiple teachers, arranged directly with HomeRoom by an authorized representative of a school or district.
2. Licensing & Tiers
- Free Trial: New accounts automatically receive 60 days of the same access described under Pro (Subscription) below, including the same restrictions (e.g. no sharing login credentials), except no payment or subscription exists. No payment method is required to start or use the trial, and it does not automatically convert to a paid subscription. At the end of the 60 days, the account reverts to the Free Tier with no charge.
- Free Tier: Requires a registered account. Classroom data is stored locally in your browser, encrypted, and persists between sessions on that device. Free accounts also receive an automatic cloud backup (a single, restorable snapshot — not live sync); if you clear browser data, use another browser, or switch devices, you can restore that backup, but ongoing edits will not follow you between devices automatically.
- Pro (Subscription): Grants the right to store and sync data live across devices via the HomeRoom cloud (Supabase), removes Free tier usage caps, and unlocks Remote Control and Guest/Substitute mode. You may use your account across multiple personal devices, but you are strictly prohibited from sharing your login credentials with others.
3. District & Bulk Licenses
- Purchasing Entity: If your Pro access is provided through a District License, the purchasing school or district is the billing party and may manage, assign, reassign, or revoke the seats it has purchased.
- Individual Terms Still Apply: Each teacher using a District-assigned seat remains individually bound by these Terms, including the prohibition on sharing login credentials and the responsibilities described in Section 6 (Code of Conduct & Student Safety).
- Seat Changes: If a district reduces or reassigns seats, the affected account reverts to the Free Tier — local data is retained as described in Section 5, but live Cloud Sync is disabled until a new seat is assigned.
4. Pricing & Payments
- Pro Subscription: Billed annually. The annual fee for HomeRoom Pro may be updated to reflect hosting costs and service improvements.
- District & Bulk Pricing: Pricing for District Licenses is arranged directly with HomeRoom on request and may differ from the individual Pro Subscription rate.
- Non-Payment: If a Pro Subscription is cancelled or not renewed, your data remains accessible in your local browser, but cloud syncing will be disabled. We will hold your cloud backup for 1 year so you can export your data, or come back when you're ready.
5. Data & Privacy
- Account Requirement & Data Risk: All users must register an account to access the App. During the Free Trial, and for Pro Tier users, data is stored in encrypted cloud storage with live sync, where clearing the browser cache does not affect data. For Free Tier users (after the trial ends), classroom data is stored locally in your browser and automatically backed up (a single restorable snapshot) to the cloud; it does not live-sync between devices. It is the responsibility of the user to maintain their account and export backups as needed.
- Ownership: You own all content you create. HomeRoom does not claim any rights to your classroom materials, student names, schedules, or custom backgrounds.
- Inactivity: Accounts inactive for one year will be flagged for deletion. We will send a reminder email 60 days before deleting any cloud-synced data.
6. Code of Conduct & Student Safety
- Student Privacy: You acknowledge that you are solely responsible for compliance with your school or district's student privacy policies. We strongly recommend using initials or first names only when creating rosters.
- Termination: We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your access to the App immediately if you breach these Terms.
7. Liability & Warranty
- No Warranty: HomeRoom is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind.
- Limitation of Liability: Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid for your license.
8. Intellectual Property
- HomeRoom Ownership: All source code, visual designs, custom icons, brand assets, and technical architecture are the exclusive property of HomeRoom.
- Restrictions: You are granted a license to use the App, not ownership of the underlying code. You are strictly prohibited from copying, modifying, redistributing, or reverse-engineering any part of the App's source code.
9. Governing Law
- This policy is governed by the laws of Nova Scotia, Canada. Any disputes arising from the use of HomeRoom shall be resolved in the courts of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
