1. You Control Your Data
To use HomeRoom, you must create a registered account. Your credentials and session are managed securely via Supabase.
- Free Trial (First 60 Days): New accounts automatically get the same cloud sync described under Pro Tier below for their first 60 days, at no cost, before moving to the Free Tier.
- Free Tier (Local Storage + Backup): Once the trial ends, your classroom data is stored locally in your browser. This includes student names, rosters, Planner blueprints, and Tasks. We use industry-standard AES-GCM encryption to ensure your local data is protected. Free accounts also get an automatic cloud backup — a single restorable snapshot stored on secure servers in Canada 🇨🇦 — so you can recover your data on a new device. This is a backup, not live sync: it does not keep multiple devices continuously up to date with each other.
- Pro Tier (Cloud Sync): During the trial, or if you upgrade to Pro afterward, your classroom data is securely synced live across every device you sign in to, in addition to being backed up in the cloud via Supabase. All cloud data is encrypted at rest and stored on secure servers located in Canada 🇨🇦.
2. We Don't Sell Your Information
We are in the business of helping you manage your classroom, not selling your data.
- No Ads: You will never see a third-party ad on HomeRoom.
- No Data Mining: We don't sell your email, student lists, or usage habits to anyone. Your tasks and schedules are private to you.
3. Marketing Communications
We may send you occasional product updates or announcements by email, but only if you say yes first.
- Opt-In, Not Default: Marketing emails are off by default. You can turn them on (or back off) anytime from your Account settings.
- Essential Emails Are Separate: This setting doesn't affect essential account emails — security notices, billing receipts, password resets — which we'll always send regardless.
4. How We Learn From Usage (Product Analytics)
We track a small amount of usage data — never anything about your students — so we know which parts of HomeRoom are working and which need fixing.
- Anonymous site visits: We use a cookie-free analytics tool (Umami) to count visits to our site. It can't identify you personally and doesn't follow you around the web.
- Account activity: Once you're signed in, we log a short list of product events tied to your teacher account — which onboarding steps you finish, which widgets you use, and (for signups) how you found us. This tells us what to build next; it is never used to build an advertising profile, and it's never shared or sold (see Section 2).
- What's never in it: student names, rosters, exit ticket answers, or anything else you enter about your classroom — that data stays governed by Section 1 (local encryption / cloud sync) and never enters our analytics.
- Opt out anytime: Email [email protected] and we'll turn account-activity tracking off for your account. Your classroom data and access to HomeRoom are unaffected either way.
5. Student Privacy (COPPA & Compliance)
HomeRoom is a tool for teachers. Because students do not log in, we do not knowingly collect information directly from children.
- The Teacher is the Gatekeeper: You control what you input. We recommend using first names, initials, or pseudonyms.
- School Policy: You are responsible for ensuring your use of HomeRoom complies with your district's data privacy policies.
6. Sign-In & Optional Integrations
Some parts of HomeRoom connect to other services you choose to use. We only receive what's needed to provide the specific feature you turn on.
- Google & Microsoft Sign-In: If you sign in with Google or Microsoft, we receive your name and email address from that provider to create or match your HomeRoom account. We never receive your password, and we don't access anything else in your Google or Microsoft account.
- Google Drive (Optional): If you connect Google Drive to attach files in the Unit Planner, we request access only to files you create through HomeRoom or personally pick using Google's file picker (a "drive.file" scope) — never blanket access to your Drive. You can disconnect at any time.
7. AI & Third-Party Processing
HomeRoom doesn't process your data through AI today. If we ever add optional AI features, they'll stay opt-in and off by default.
- Opt-In Only: If you don't turn on an AI feature, your data is never shared with an AI provider.
- Data Minimization: If you do, we'll only ever send the minimum data required to provide that feature.
8. Secure Payments
- Direct Billing: We use Stripe for all upgrades. We never see or store your credit card data.
9. Limitation of Liability ("As Is")
HomeRoom is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind.
10. Data Protection & Breach Protocol
In the unlikely event of a security breach that compromises your account data, we will notify you via email within 72 hours of discovery, in accordance with our obligations under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
11. Jurisdiction & Hosting
This policy is governed by the laws of Nova Scotia, Canada. All cloud data is stored in Canada. HomeRoom is operated by Hennigar Software Studio, a company incorporated in Canada.
